- Phintias and Euthymides
From the Perseus Project comes this essay tracing the development of two of the most important Greek vase painters, Phintias and Euthymides. The text illuminates the paintings by both artists and puts them in context with one another and the history of monumental painting.
- Pella
Pella is the birthplace of Alexander the Great and the site of some of the most important surviving mosaics of ancient Greece. These mosaics, copies of Greek frescoes, are our only link to what the ancient paintings may have looked like. The Hellenic Ministry of Culture presents this illustrated page on the history of Pella and the surviving examples of Greek mosaic techniques.
- Villa of the Mysteries, Pompeii
The Villa of the Mysteries contains some of the most complete surviving Roman frescoes. Buried under the ash of Mount Vesuvius, these paintings depict the rites of initiation into the cult of Dionysus, the god of revelry. Johnson County Community College's page on the villa presents many photographs of the frescoes and a detailed interpretation of the acts and figures in them.
